Louisa May Alcott (November 29, 1832 – March 6, 1888) was an American novelist best known as author of the novel Little Women and its sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. Raised by her transcendentalist parents, Abigail May and Amos Bronson Alcott in New England, she grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau.Nevertheless, her family suffered severe financial difficulties and Alcott worked to help support the family from an early age. She began to receive critical success for her writing in the 1860s. Early in her career, she sometimes used the pen name A. M. Barnard. With her pen name Louisa wrote novels for young adults in juvenile hall.Published in 1868, Little Women is set in the Alcott family home, Orchard House, in Concord, Massachusetts and is loosely based on Alcott's childhood experiences with her three sisters. 1 | [on life and death] Life is my university, and I hope to graduate from it with some distinction. |
| On spirit: Immortality is the passing of a soul through many lives of experiences, and such as are truly lived, used, and learned, helped on to the next, each growing richer, happier and higher, carrying with it only the real memories of what has gone before. |
| On friendship: A faithful friend is a strong defense; And he that hath found hath found a treasure. |
| I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship. |
| Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead. |
| Don't let the sun go down upon your anger; forgive each other, help each other, and begin again tomorrow. |
| Be comforted, dear soul! There is always light behind the clouds. |
| If people really want to go, and really try all their lives, I think they will get in; for I don't believe there are any locks on that door, or any guards at the gate. I always imagine it is as it is in the picture, where the shining ones stretch out their hands to welcome poor Christian as he comes up from the river. |
| Life is my college. May I graduate well, and earn some honors! |
| Money is the root of all evil, and yet it is such a useful root that we cannot get on without it any more than we can without potatoes. |
| My definition [of a philosopher] is of a man up in a balloon, with his family and friends holding the ropes which confine him to earth and trying to haul him down. |
| It takes people a long time to learn the difference between talent and genius, especially ambitious young men and women. |
